How the Monsanto Protection Act snuck into law

A provison that protects the biotech giant from litigation passed Congress without many members knowing about it

Slipped into the Agricultural Appropriations Bill, which passed through Congress last week, was a small provision that’s a big deal for Monsanto and its opponents. The provision protects genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks and has thus been dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act” by activists who oppose the biotech giant. President Barack Obama signed the spending bill, including the provision, into law on Tuesday.

Since the act’s passing, more than 250,000 people have signed a petition opposing the provision and a rally, consisting largely of farmers organized by the Food Democracy Now network, protested outside the White House Wednesday. Not only has anger been directed at the Monsanto Protection Act’s content, but the way in which the provision was passed through Congress without appropriate review by the Agricultural or Judiciary Committees. The biotech rider instead was introduced anonymously as the larger bill progressed — little wonder food activists are accusing lobbyists and Congress members of backroom dealings.

The Food Democracy Now and the Center for Food are directing blame at the Senate Appropriations Committee and its chairman, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md. According to reports, many members of Congress were apparently unaware that the “Monsanto Protection Act” even existed within the spending bill, HR 933; they voted in order to avert a government shutdown.

“It sets a terrible precedent,” noted the International Business Times. “Though it will only remain in effect for six months until the government finds another way to fund its operations, the message it sends is that corporations can get around consumer safety protections if they get Congress on their side. Furthermore, it sets a precedent that suggests that court challenges are a privilege, not a right.”

  1. The only way we are going to wake from this hellish nightmare is to completely disenfranchise these warped and demented souls. We must turn away from their system and create one based upon Care, Compassion, Empathy, Respect and Reverence for ALL living things. To protest it, revolt against it with violence is futile. We must do something so revolutionary that we can never find our way back to this place again and again and again. We must create a new world without their “approval”.

There is a reason that the “elite” of this world converge on Bohemian Grove, once a year, to perform their Ritual of “Kill Care”. They have acheived the ultimate abomination. They influenced us to not “Care” as well…until now.

Drkreasearch……we have but a limited numbers of years left upon this planet..if that. Please take a look at the Arctic blog and share with your readers. Perhaps we could change the course of this bleak future by healing what ails us spiritually first….maybe the rest will follow.
As I see it now, there is an escalation of deception on so many issues that it is difficult to keep up with all them…but, if we can get to the root of what ails us we have a chance. Anything else is a band-aid on a gaping wound.

  2. I agree totally Jamie. As soon as I read over the internet on Wed morn that obama had signed this protection act for monsanto I called my congressman office and expressed my shock and disappointment that he had allowed this to happen. I also wrote him an e-mail w/much detail, like how obama had campaigned in 2007 in Des Moines Iowa yelling that Americans deserved to know if their food was GMO……How has the American public been so deceived for so long? I believe that this country is being dumbed-down thru the foods we eat and the programming from the boob tube~I believe that WE WILL OVERCOME and I mean that w/my whole heart and soul~Namaste

  3. Dearest Lucy, the moment we stop, as a collective group of divine souls, calling these people by the names we have been trained to call them we can move in an opposite direction. As this site’s name states “NODISINFO”. We have no “governement”, “Congressmen”, “Senators”, “President”, “Military”. We have no “Corporations” , “Schools of higher education” or even “Religion”.. What we have, and have always had on Earth, is a System of power that demands obedience through participation. We have Cults on Earth.
If we call things…and people….by the name their actions portray then we can stop telling ourselves lies.
As I was working in my garden yesterday I had a clear message revealed to me, “Attend to the Garden of Life and it will attend to you.” I have been instructed in this life to live outside of society…to not participate in the pasttimes that so many are led to participate in. I had no cooperation so found myself just on the fringes of society. We have created, either willfully or in our ignorance, a Garden of Death and tend it with out time, money and worse, our thoughts. We believe in this system or we could not support it.

Remove the perceived power from these unevolved souls and you will see a radical change in the world…but, my guides caution strongly replacing anyone in such a position. As they say, “Flotsam will always rise to the top as it lacks substance and weight.”

You have a good heart, Lucy, those in power have no value for a heart centered life so this is perceived as a flaw. It is not. :)

What would happen if tomorrow we all woke up with amnesia and had no memory of the vast and predatory network of Death we have either created or supported? What would we then set about creating? Inherently we are creators, loving, compassionate and possess a wonderful sense of humor. We are all those things that which is despised by those who need to control others for they have no control over themselves. If tomorrow we awoke with no memory of this world I have no doubt that we would set about creating and sustaining life. It is the inherent nature of our being.

May we all develop an amnesia so profound that no memory of this Cult of Death is ever recalled.

  4. and so it is~

  5. Monsanto’s Very Bad Week: 3 Big Blows for GMO Food

“It hasn’t been a good week for Monsanto and the rest of the biotech industry.”

“Just three days ago, Mexico banned genetically engineered corn. Citing the risk of imminent harm to the environment, a Mexican judge ruled that, effective immediately, no genetically engineered corn can be planted in the country. This means that companies like Monsanto will no longer be allowed to plant or sell their corn within the country’s borders.

At the same time, the County Council for the island of Kauai passed a law that mandates farms to disclose pesticide use and the presence of genetically modified crops. The bill also requires a 500-foot buffer zone near medical facilities, schools and homes — among other locations.

And the big island of Hawaii County Council gave preliminary approval to a bill that prohibits open air cultivation, propagation, development or testing of genetically engineered crops or plants. The bill, which still needs further confirmation to become law, would also prohibit biotech companies from operating on the Big Island.”
